Speedometer (in)accuracy

When I was researching scooters I frequently checked out JustGottaScoot (lots of scooter reviews but no TGBs -- Bill, you gotta find a Minneapolis-area dealer who will lend Dave, the site's administrator, scooters to review).  Dave, as part of his scooter reviews, compares the displayed speedo values with a GPS and has found that virtually all of them overstate true speed, sometimes by a substantial amount (10-20%).

Well, sure enough, in my preliminary runs through the neighborhood in my new R50X I discovered that the displayed mph on the gauge significantly overstated what was showing up on the street-pole mounted radars as my speed.  I went back with my car and confirmed the accuracy of the radars.  The R50X display will go as high as 37 on a consistent basis (I've hit 39 a couple of times and 40 once briefly), but I'm pretty sure I'm not going more than 30 (remember, this is a restricted engine).  Keep that in mind when you think you're doing 25 to keep within the posted speed limit -- you're probably only doing 20 (and the cagers know that).

I'll be receiving a "dashboard-style" mounting bracket for my scoot today, allowing me to hook up my Garmin Nuvi GPS.  I can then do more extensive testing of the speedo accuracy and report my findings here.

Bill:  Is there any way to switch out a part in the speedo chain to make the display more accurate?

We have several dealers up in that area.  If you guys need a test demo, let me know. Right now everyone is out of stock, so we'll have to wait a bit.

As for the MPH, I've never tested it and have no idea if it can be adjusted. You might try a local dealer and see if they can work with our tech Ed to figure that out.

Thanks,

- Bill

I'm wondering if  the speedo's are calabrated for the
the larger format tires , they may really be based on 3.5x10 tire format...?

I wondered about the tire sizes messing up the speedo accuracy as well.  Here are the results of my speedo tests using my Garmin GPS:

The speedo is pretty much accurate at 14 mph and below (but not exactly so).  It's hard to maintain constant speed at that low a throttle setting with the CVT.

16 mph on the speedo = 14 mph on the GPS
21 mph on the speedo = 18 mph on the GPS
24 mph on the speedo = 20 mph on the GPS
26 mph on the speedo = 21 mph on the GPS
28-37 mph on the speedo = 6 mph less on the GPS (consistently)

Thus, top sustained real speed is 31 mph (the speedo reads 37), with occasional peaks at 32-33 mph.

Switching both readouts to kilometers per hour also resulted in the speedo overstating true speed but I didn't do rigorous testing in km/h.

I suspect the 12" wheels are the issue, and that TGB only uses one speedo assembly regardless of the size wheels used on the bike.  Presumably, that means there is a solution (since some mfrs must make linkages for 12" wheels).  Any ideas?

European model is issued with 13'' wheels. One of my friends test an R50X and he estimate that speedometer lied for 10 km/h. It's about 5,5 mph more that should be. Really top speed with stock engine should be about 60 km/h or 33 mph.
